Custom Orthotics can help balance the foot and decrease the stress on the great toe when there is a bunion in the foot. A bunion (hallux valgus) is characterized by bending of the great toe sideways. Bunion is the term used to refer to the bump on the side of the great toe joint. The bump is partly due to the swollen tissues around the joint (where the first toe and metatarsal meet).

This is often improperly described as an enlargement of bone or tissue around the joint at the head of the big toe (metatarsophalangeal joint). As the great toe (hallux) turns in toward the second toe, the tissues surrounding the joint may become swollen and tender.
